Monday Maven: Soft Skin for the Win

Spring is officially here.  Gone are the winter days where we keep our skin covered and hidden from the world.  Now that's it's time for some fun in the sun, make sure your skin not only looks good, but that it's soft and touchable.  Remember, we want to play in the sand not feel like it!  Spring is the perfect transitional time to nurse your skin back to summer softness!  Here are some tips for soft and supple skin.

1. Know your skin type

Before you even start to find to find the best way to moisturize your skin, you must first know your skin.  Moisture retention is dependent on the type of skin you have.  If you have oily skin, the way our skin retains moisture will be different from someone who has dry skin.  Types of skin include: dry, oily, sensitive, and then a combination of any two or three.  One part of your body may even differ in skin type.  So first examine your skin from head to toe to determine what type of skin you are working with.

2. Be an H2O Pro

We all know it's important to cleanse are skin, but it's also important how we do it.  One effective way to keep our skin clean is to use both hot (really warm) and cold water.  When washing my my face I always start by first washing off any product (i.e- make up, lotion, etc.) of my face with warm water.  Next, I place a really warm towel on my face to open and clean my pores.  I am always sure to splash my face with a little cold water to close my newly cleansed pores.

3. Exfoliate

Another way I like to keep my skin soft is to exfoliate.  Exfoliating is the best way to remove dead skin cells and reveal soft beautiful skin.  There a many ways to exfoliate including using scrubs with sugar or even sand.  Another way is to use pumice stones (for feet).  There are also loofas and other types of cloth made to exfoliate skin.  My personal preference is using body scrubs, and pumice stones.

4.  Moisturize

There are many products made to keep your body moisturized.  I can only speak from personal experience as far as what works for me.  Luckily, I've heard from close friends and family that these products have given them similar positive results.

Eucerin lotion- I use this to keep my skin moisturized in the winter.  It is very thick, yet not really greasy and leaves your skin soft, smooth, and moisturized.

The Vaseline Trick- If you have been experiencing particularly dry skin then try the vaseline trick.  What you need is vaseline, cling wrap, and some think socks.  This is mostly used for areas like heels, elbows, and knees.  Put a nice amount of Vaseline on the desired area, wrap it with cling wrap and put on socks or desired clothing.  Let it stay overnight or for as long as you can take it.  Your skin should feel super soft when you take off the cling wrap.

Dove Shea Butter Bar-  I just recently purchased this some Dove Shea Butter soap and it is amazing.  It has a really nice subtle smell and it makes my skin feel so soft.  This is the first bar of soap that has ever made my skin feel so soft!  Most soap dries skin out, but this one definitely leaves my skin moisturized. I would definitely recommend it!

5. Protect

After you've gotten your skin silky and soft, be sure to protect it.  Your skin has a lot to deal with from, weather, to fabrics, to products.  Protect your skin as much as you can by using sunscreen and ultimately paying close attention to how your skin reacts to different things.

How do you keep your skin oh so soft?

  1. My skin can get very dry, so I have to moisturize my entire body after every shower or bath. But it surely pays off.

I've been using Nivea Q10 Plus Body Lotion for years and I swear by it. Not only does it moisturize my body, it smells great and it really does have a toning effect.

  2. www.marykay.com/chymerehayes ---> I honestly believe that MK offers the best skin care products and they are all custom for the type of skin you have. I've tried a lot and thought they were too heavy or rough, and discovered that most are water based. Also, they don't animal test. My go-to-source for all my skin care needs & especially loving the new Botanicals Collection!!

    1. Hey Chymere, I've never tried any MK moisturizing products, but I love some of their fragrances. There's one that I had as a freshman in high school that I can never find anymore :(

  3. Great post! I think your first point is so so important. Many times we'll just throw any ole product on our faces and then reap the consequences. We have to start by knowing what type of skin we have before we can even begin trying to make it better. Thanks for the steps. I totally skip a bunch. lol

    1. You're right Vonae, we're quick to try things without knowing out own skin first, and you are so not alone, I find myself skipping a few steps myself sometimes lol

  4. I'm a step-skipper for sure when it comes to things of this nature...BUT I always moisturize after I shower...it's a must. I need to remember to splash cold water on my face when I am done. It's posts like this that help me do something different, better in fact. I need to take better care of my skin the older I get...thanks for sharing!
