How To Develop Personal Style

Whether you were born a fashionista or have grown into one, fashion is always fun! Fashion provides freedom and creativity like no other.  If you really want to take advantage of all of the fun and creativity fashion has to offer, it's not enough to be a fashionista. You have to go one step further and develop your personal style like Yves Saint Laurent said, "Fashions fade, style is eternal."

How To Develop Your Personal Style

1. Explore

The world of fashion is endless! Explore it. Get to know what you like. Don't just stop at the fashion that's out now, go back decades! Who knows, you may find something you like. Notice the similarities in the things you like. An easy way to do this is to create fashion inspiration boards. To do this all you need is some poster board or construction paper, magazines or a computer and printer, and tape or glue.  Paste any styles you like on the board so that you can begin creating a visual of what styles you like. Doing this will also allow you to see the similarities and differences in the things you like. The things you always find yourself attracted to (i.e. maybe you find that you are always attracted to skirts, or a certain color, or a certain fabric) are the foundation of your personal style. It's the basis of what you love about fashion!

2. Define

Now that you've laid your fashion foundation it's time to build your wardrobe. Find pieces that match your personal style. The key here is to find the right balance of versatile and statement pieces. You also want to make sure you find at least 2-5 basic pieces for every occasion. This will allow you to mix, match, and accessorize.

3. Maintain

Since you've started building your wardrobe, make sure to keep it updated. Take notice of the seasons' trends and choose a few you'd like to try out with your personal style. The most important part about maintaining your personal style is to make sure that your clothes are always tailored to fit your body and organized at all times. Besides, you never know when or where you'll have to be able to rock your personal style! Always be prepared and ALWAYS have fun with it! What's fashion without fun?

What is your personal style? How did you develop it?

  1. I like your points on tailoring your outfits. I'm taking up sewing class and investing in a sewing machine this summer to tailor more outfits. My personal style is feminine mixed with city laid back.

  2. I like your points, although I haven't clearly defined what my style is yet. I wear what I like and it's that simple for me. If it feels like me, I rock it. If not, I get uncomfortable and I guess that's the same for everyone. I can't say that it is consistent either...well to me it's not. But I can say that my style has definitely evolved over the past few years, as have I.
