Are you new to blogging, and trying to find your niche?
You're not the only one! There are tons of new blogs created daily by new bloggers who want to test the waters. When I started blogging 3 years ago, a "niche" was the furthest thing from my mind. I simply started my old blog because it seemed fun and my friends and I wanted to give it a try. Now a million mistakes and lots of fun later I know one of the most important things you can do is define your blog's niche BEFORE you launch your blog. There are many reasons you should do this and that's a post all in itself, but today I'll just focus on helping you figure out how to find your niche.
A Blogger's Guide To Finding Your Niche
Make a List Of Your Interests
Before you begin a blog it's a good idea to sit down and write a list of all the things you're passionate about. Whatever you really LOVE is sure to make it in your top 3 or 5 on that list. If what you want to blog about didn't make your top five, then you may want to really think about whether or not you'll want to keep blogging about it after a month. Whatever did make it in your top five will be sure to show up on your blog at one time or another. The point is really to choose something that you're passionate to blog about, because you'll be doing it strictly for the love and fun of it at first.
Be Open, But Not Too Open
Goldilocks & The Three Bears might have been on to something with the idea of the "perfect porridge." When you choose your blog niche make sure it's not too broad, not too narrow, but just right. Remember you want to continue your blog for years so making your niche too narrow will severely limit your content. However, making your niche too broad will leave your blog feeling like it has no real identity. Find a nice content balance for your blog. Don't try to cover everything you like on your blog, only what you're most passionate about. Allow your blog to develop a unique identity of it's own.
Know Yourself & What You Want To Give The World
At the end of the day, what you blog about is a reflection of you. If you're passionate and authentic, your content will flow easily and people will be drawn to that. If you're wishy washy and unsure of who you are, then people will pick up on that and your blog may suffer because of it. Really commit to staying true to who you are as a blogger. It's really easy to want to copy someone who is successful in the blog world. What's important to understand however, is that the people who become rockstar bloggers get noticed because they are not afraid to be who they are flaws and all! Be you!
