3 Things Keeping You From Being a Great Blogger

Hey Loves! Over these past few months I've continued to receive questions about blogging, and really I'm quite honored to receive them. When I started blogging, I never thought that people would come to me for advice on the subject. Now that they do, I definitely intend to help as much as I can and provide as much guidance as I can. With that being said, I thought I'd do a post on the top 3 things that keeps you from being a great blogger.

I'm sure any and everyone who is a blogger knows that blogging can be anything but easy.  When you start a blog, everything is so fresh and new and you're filled with excitement. You think that you'll never get enough of blogging. Blogging is all you want to do, but then it hits...blogger fatigue. Don't let this keep you from being great! Here are 3 things to pay attention to and work on.

1. Lack of Confidence

Lack of confidence is the number one blog killer! Honestly, it's the number one dream killer. If you want to be a blogger, you have to be make the choice to be confident not just in who you are, but in your writing style and voice.

The fix: The quickest way to build some confidence and identify your writing voice is to write about everything. Get a journal or open a word document and write about any and everything. This way you'll let go of the fear of writing and of just being who you are.

2. Lack of Consistency

We often have the ideas, but lack the dedication. One thing I've learned as a blogger is that your readers love consistency. Consistency could be refer to the fact that you always cover a certain topic. Consistency could also mean that you post every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The way you define consistency is totally up to you, but realize that some form of consistency is necessary.

The fix: I know you've heard it time an time again, but start an editorial calendar! As a blogger, sometimes an editorial calendar will be your saving grace because it's a place to not only record all of our ideas, but it allows you to put yourself on a loose schedule and allows you to always stay on track. Editorial calendars will help you with consistency!

3. Lack of Visibility

So you've decided to be a blogger, awesome! Now you have to work on being visible! Who wants to blog if you're not reaching your target audience, or worse...no audience at all? Most of us started blogging to help someone or to show case something we hold special to our hearts. While you must have a personal love for blogging, support and interaction will be two things that keep you going. The only way you'll have support and interaction is to be visible!

The fix: There are several ways to make yourself visible in the blog world. The biggest ways include twitter chats, forums, commenting on other blogs and good old fashion emails! There are amazing twitter chats like the Blogtrends chat that happens every Monday at 9pm that can be joined and followed by using the hashtag #blogtrends. Many website also have forums that you can join and chat with others about shared interests. Also, don't be afraid to comment on other blogs and email other bloggers to introduce yourself. Connecting with other bloggers and your readers will help to increase your visibility.

  2. Great post! I have a friend who needs to read this. He has great ideas for a business, but he doubts himself. He's never going to get over his fears if he doesn't just "do it!". I have so much confidence in myself and my blog. I will make blogging my career and be a top blogger if it kills me lol! No if's and's or but's about it! RoRos World

    1. OMG Giovanna! Me too, I have changed a few times, but I've been sticking to my editorial calendar and trying to blog only when I really feel like it so that I'm not just blogging to blog.

  8. This is so helpful. I see my issue as visibility. I announce my posts on twitter & FB and notice that people check out the posts but I do not have many followers. I am only almost 2 months in but I have been trying to figure out a way, in addition to patience & time, to increase my following. Thank you for this post.

  9. Hi Kelley! Thank you for this post. I needed this. I'm new to blogging like Natalie and working on increasing my following. I've been very consistent but sometimes find myself blogging just to blog, not too often because I love to talk and usually have something to say about fashion/beauty. I think participating in your Blogger Box Swap will help too! I'm definitely going to implement the editorial calendar.
